Benefits of cryoanalgesia

Pain reduction: 

Cryoanalgesia can significantly reduce postoperative pain, enabling earlier mobilization and improved rehabilitation

Possibility of accelerated recovery:

Cryoanalgesia can be an important component of pain management strategies within ERAS protocols, contributing to optimized analgesia and shortening of hospitalization

Alternative to epidural analgesia: 

Cryoanalgesia can be an alternative to epidural analgesia in pain management after thoracotomy, providing comparable pain relief with a lower risk of complications. An additional advantage is the maintenance of pain reduction during the longer postoperative recovery period

Lower opioid consumption:

Thanks to effective pain relief, cryoanalgesia can help minimize the need for opioid pain medications, reducing the risk of opioid-related side effects

Cryoanalgesia protocol recommendation

The freezing site for VATS, RATS and thoracotomy includes:

3–5 intercostal nerves between the Th4 and Th10 intercostal space, on the side of the thoracic entry. The active freezing part of the probe placed in the extrapleural space, under the lower edge of the rib, approximately 2 cm lateral to the ends of the transverse processes of the vertebral body.

Freezing time:

1–2 minutes of freezing per intercostal nerve – depending on the surgical access.
